One could take a look at the Sachetana project of rainwater harvesting from rooftops which provides high quality drinking water at the household level free from Fluoride/Arsenic/Nitrates .

This has been implemented in 4 districts of Karnataka by the NGO BIRD-K .

Firstly, thanks a lot for your comment.

I agree with your point that given the time constraints, defining specific topics probably makes sense for us. But as far as the evaluation process is concerned, even though variety in plans will make that process tough, it’s something that’s commonly done in business plan competitions and VC funds which are sector agnostic. Yes, it would require us to define metrics which cater to any domain.

On the funding part, I agree that we might lose a couple of players or donor agencies due to lack of focus and that working in a few areas will help us make a stronger pitch, but we can certainly find a lot of agencies who are open to ideas about anything and everything.

The idea of allowing students to develop their own direction is certainly appealing. Let their creativity and passion drive the effort I say. Given the time constraints of the challenge and competing demands for the students however (other classes, etc.), I’m not sure it’s very pragmatic. I would also think it might be more difficult to judge when side-by-side comparisons aren’t readily available.

Thinking from a funding/sponsorship/marketing perspective, it seems Acara might have less leverage when approaching possible contributors/sponsors if the challenge were open-ended.
